The 46th Annual NCBL Conference

The National Conference of Black Lawyers has come to Durham, North Carolina in 2015 to address the ongoing assault on the civil and human rights of African Americans.

We believe there is no better time and place than here, in North Carolina, where so many monumental events related to the Black struggle for racial justice have occurred. The Greensboro Sit-ins, the Wilmington Ten, the Charlotte Three. These are just a few of the names that have come to symbolize our fight against the oppressive forces that would deny us our right to live and be treated as equal citizens of this country.

NCBL’s presence in North Carolina is a testament to the historic role that North Carolina communities have played in the civil rights movement and serves to honor our forbears who took part in that struggle. We recognize, however, that the battle is far from won. Whether it’s the countless deaths of unarmed Black citizens at the hands of police or right-wing legislative efforts to roll back our hard-won right to vote without impediment and free of intimidation, Black people in America face a daily battle to protect their lives, land, and basic liberties.

Through this, our 46th Annual Conference, NCBL seeks to coalesce with legal and political activists in the southeastern United States around the pressing issues of law enforcement accountability, land loss, and voting and labor rights. We have brought together a number of distinguished and accomplished lawyers, scholars, and activists to discuss these and other important issues, and to develop strategies for resolving them for the betterment of our people in the months to come.
