COMMITMENT & DEDICATION

  • The National Conference of Black Lawyers (NCBL) is an association of lawyers, scholars, judges, legal workers, law students, and legal activists.

  • We exist for the purpose of enhancing our professional strength and skill for the benefit of the Black community in its struggle for full social political and economic rights.

  • We seek to utilize the vehicles of the law to advance the fight against racism (white supremacy) and the inequities it produces.

NCBL STATEMENT

SCOTUS RULING ON DOBBS

The Sad, Yet Foreseeable Result of a Policing System Based on the "Slave Patrols"

The National Conference of Black Lawyers extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Tyre Nichols, the 29-year-old son and father who was viciously murdered by Memphis police officers. This is yet another murder of a Black person by police in a long history of police murders most recently including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, and Philando Castile. This is yet another indictment of a criminal legal system that targets Black people for racially disparate treatment, including excessive monitoring, longer sentences, harsher treatment and murder. It is yet another piece of evidence to support the abolition of the current criminal legal system.

NCBL STATEMENT

THE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION CASE REIFIES THE LIE THAT WHITE PEOPLE ARE SUPERIOR

The Sad, Yet Foreseeable Result of a Policing System Based on the "Slave Patrols"

The National Conference of Black Lawyers (NCBL) is both saddened and angered, but not surprised, that the majority of the U.S. Supreme Court held that affirmative action based on race in university admissions is unconstitutional. This Court is now triumphant in its furtherance of a multi-decade white nativist public campaign to deny Black people their fundamental human rights.

Distinguished Professor Emerita

History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies

University of California, Santa Cruz

"An essential resource when it was first published in 1978, Lennox Hinds’ new edition of Illusions of Justice reminds us of the importance of combining local and international legal resistance with ongoing movement organizing.

Progressive legal workers, scholars and activists alike will appreciate the valuable historical context offered by this text for those of us involved in contemporary battles against racist and heteropatriarchal state violence."

BERNARD K. FREAMON

Professor of Law Emeritus

Seton Hall Law School

". . . a superb resource for all scholars, practitioners and activists interested in civil and human rights in America and throughout the world. Thoroughly researched and persuasively argued."

ILLUSIONS OF JUSTICE is an adaptation of the Legal Petition submitted to the United Nations on December 11, 1978, the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United States, on behalf of Petitioners.

Proceeds from the sale of the hardcover book are being donated to the National Conference of Black Lawyers.

MICHAEL WELCH

Ph.D., Professor Criminal Justice

Rutgers University, USA

"Illusions of Justice remains an important resource for scholars, researchers, and lawyers – as well as activists.

Likewise, it continues to provide substantial guidance for the civil rights and human rights movements . . .

I plan to consult the work while writing my own book on political imprisonment.

Moreover, the added chapters (i.e., Death Penalty, Abuse of Power by Police) further bolster the vast volume of cases."
