SCOTUS RULING ON DOBBS
The Sad, Yet Foreseeable Result of a Policing System Based on the "Slave Patrols"
The National Conference of Black Lawyers extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Tyre Nichols, the 29-year-old son and father who was viciously murdered by Memphis police officers. This is yet another murder of a Black person by police in a long history of police murders most recently including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, and Philando Castile. This is yet another indictment of a criminal legal system that targets Black people for racially disparate treatment, including excessive monitoring, longer sentences, harsher treatment and murder. It is yet another piece of evidence to support the abolition of the current criminal legal system.

THE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION CASE REIFIES THE LIE THAT WHITE PEOPLE ARE SUPERIOR
The Sad, Yet Foreseeable Result of a Policing System Based on the "Slave Patrols"
The National Conference of Black Lawyers (NCBL) is both saddened and angered, but not surprised, that the majority of the U.S. Supreme Court held that affirmative action based on race in university admissions is unconstitutional. This Court is now triumphant in its furtherance of a multi-decade white nativist public campaign to deny Black people their fundamental human rights.

Lennox S. Hinds is a retired Professor Emeritus of Law and former Chair of the Administration of Justice Program, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

A graduate of The City College of New York and Rutgers Law School, he was awarded the law school’s J. Skelly Wright Award for his contribution to civil rights.

He was a Charles H. Revson Fellow, Center for Legal Education and Urban Policy, City College of New York 1979-1980.

In addition to his practice as a criminal defense and international human rights lawyer, he was Nelson Mandela’s US attorney and counsel in the US to the Government of South Africa, the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa, and (SWAPO) of Namibia.

He is the Permanent Representative to the United Nations for the International Association of Democratic Lawyers.
