STRATEGIC LAWYERING IN POLICE MISCONDUCT LITIGATION

On Friday, October 8, 2021, 12:00 – 4:30 PM, the National Conference of Black Lawyers’ Law Enforcement Accountability Project (LEAP) is holding a legal education webinar session designed to train a cadre of lawyers to file civil suits in Federal Court on behalf of the victims of police misconduct. Community activists will also be armed with knowledge about Colin Kaepernicks “Know Your Rights” when they are under threat, and how to react legally, especially during protests.
Throughout the training, LEAP will utilize the fundamentals of Section 1983 litigation, the framework of the legal system, and existing laws to file civil suits that would identify:
police officers who actually committed abusive acts,
police officers who were present and failed to prevent the abusive acts,
police officers who conspired to cover-up the abusive conduct,
police chiefs and superior police officers who failed to properly train and supervise such police officers and
the city or municipality which condone and maintain a policy of abusive conduct by failing to discipline such officers accused in the past of misconduct.
We are facing critical times in America where lawyers must receive civil rights litigation education, even for the defense of criminal clients in excessive use-of-force cases.
