NCBL STATEMENT OF OUTRAGE OVER VIOLENCE AGAINST ASIAN PEOPLE

YET ANOTHER AFFIRMATION THAT WHITE SUPREMACY CONTINUES TO REIGN

MARCH 19, 2021

The National Conference of Black Lawyers (NCBL) condemns the vicious, rampant, and violent attacks on Asian community members, including the recent horrific murders in Atlanta.

Part of a long legacy of anti-Asian violence in the US, the recent catalysts for these attacks include the ignorant, irresponsible, and deliberate reference to the virus as the “Chinese virus”, a racially-charged term that has been verbalized by attackers during several of these targeted attacks.

The continued vilification of China and North Korea has also added to anti-Asian rhetoric and violence.

Words are powerful and can have devastating consequences, and even more so when it comes from the mouth of one who was at the highest rung of power.

The NCBL’s mission and history embrace human rights for all people and, attacks on anyone based on nationality or ethnicity should not be tolerated in silence.

The NCBL stands in solidarity and supports the call to address and bring an end to these violent attacks, some of which have resulted in the loss of lives to those who are targeted, for no reason other than being Asian.
